I got into Lizzy Borden the during the fall of 2007. I absolutely love Master of Disguise and from what I’ve heard from them so far, I can still say that’s my favorite album from them. Still, this album is decent but a definite depature from the band’s earlier works. I haven’t listened to Deal With the Devil, so maybe this heavier sound is right in line with that album.
For me though, Appointment with Death hasn’t really clicked with me. I know it’s got rave reviews, but I was hoping a more of the theatrics from Master of Disguise. My problem with a lot of current heavy metal is that it all just kinda sounds the same to me, and that’s the big problem I’m running into here. The album many of the songs sound the same throughout. I will say that Lizzy’s voice is still in fantastic shape and he’s one of the better vocalists in all of rock.
My two favorite tracks (and the only reason I keep pulling the CD out on an inrregular basis) are “Under My Skin” and “The Darker Side”. “Under My Skin” has “radio hit” written all over it. Obviously, Lizzy Borden isn’t going to get any radioplay in this day and age, so maybe they should’ve just sold the song to Papa Roach instead, because that’s that band that this song reminds me of. “The Darker Side” is a nice slow song that shows off Lizzy’s screams, the lyrics & music kind of remind me of something you’d hear in a H.I.M. song.
The band photos for the album insert are absolutely ridiculous and a far cry from anything the band has looked like before. They look like some Scandanavian death metal act.
Highlights: “Appointment with Death”, “Live Forever”, “Under Your Skin”, “Perfect World (I Don’t Wanna Live)”, “The Darker Side”

  1. Just like Avantasia, I’m in the same boat with you on this new Lizzy record. I’ve been a fan of Lizzy since the beginning so I was really looking forward to it and I picked it up right when it was released. I listened a couple of times but nothing really stood out. Like you said, it all sounded the same.

The other problem was that it had to compete with other albums I was enjoying or hadn’t listened to yet. Now it’s lost in the shuffle but still in the pile to listen to…..and that pile grows everyday!
