About

So… Who Are You?

Hello folks, I’m Metal Misfit: Male, late-20s, retail worker by day/blogger by night, currently residing in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Some of you may know me from my other blog (http://metalmisfit.wordpress.com), which is mostly a pop culture blog geared towards 80s nostalgia. I’ve talked about music there in the past, but I’ve started up this new blog because I wanted to have one devoted entirely to the hard rock/heavy metal scene (Get it? Metal Excess?), be it current, 90s, 80s, or 70s.

Also, I don’t have any music skills to speak of (other than a few brief flirtations with piano and guitar in my younger years), so I’m obviously commenting on the work of others that I could never do myself. But hey, those that can’t do… write about it.

Actually, to toot my own horn, I don’t think I’m that bad at doing the high-pitch sleazy hair metal vocals. My fiancee has said I can sound like Axl Rose at times. While I wouldn’t dare compare myself to him (or any other singer), I think I’d do alright in a garage band with no hopes of ever getting signed. =) I’ve also been told that I do a good “Elvis” and that I have a good crooning voice ala Frank Sinatra.

So… What Exactly Will You Be Doing Here?

Hey, it’s a blog, I’ll do anything I want. Reviews, stream of consciousness, rock ‘n’ roll newstalk… whatever comes to mind. The main mission here is to log every freakin’ CD I own and say a few words about those bands and albums. I’ve dabbled with this idea before, even going as far to set up a GeoCities site that I never finished, but then I realized blogging is instant gratification and I don’t have to mess with HTML.

So… What Do You Listen To?

I’m a HUGE fan of the hair/glam/sleaze bands… And no, I don’t find those terms offensive (as some do)– they totally rule! Certainly, the commercial peak for bands of that ilk was in the 1980s, but there’s been an INCREDIBLY strong output from a new generation hair-metalers (Most seem to come from Europe… USA needs to represent!) and the old guard is still rockin’ out with quality stuff as well.

I’m into other various kinds of metal as well: power, pop, NWOBHM, speed, and thrash… You could probably throw more subgenres into the mix, but genre labeling gives me headaches, so let’s just say I love HEAVY METAL and ROCK & ROLL!

Anyway, I hope you dig the site and I hope you check out the links because there’s lots of cool rock/metal pages out there.

So… What Can You Do For Me?

In the short time METAL EXCESS has existed, I’ve been lucky enough to associate with some great labels, bands, management teams and websites like Roadrunner Records, Frontiers RecordsPerris Records, Rocket Science Ventures, AFM RecordsChavis Records, MVD Entertainment Group, Metal Revelation, Escape MusicAll About The Music, RED Music Distribution, AC Entertainment, KrokusSteelheart, Steevi Jaimz, Alexx CaliseIdols Are Dead, Syrym, Dame Fortune, 1977, Danger, Hard Rock Nights, Hard Rock Hideout, Heavy Metal Time MachineHeavy Metal Addiction, Metal Odyssey and many more!

  2. EVen I’ve started a new blog dedicated entirely to metal:

    http://metalbeans.wordpress.com/

  3. You’re in your mid-20s and into ’80s metal! That’s great! You have excellent taste in music!

I’m in my late-30s…I was a teenager in the 1980s, so I grew up listening to 80s metal. So I think it’s great that someone who was born in the 1980s loves this music.

And your CD reviews are excellent. Actually, I’m gonna pick up Guns N Roses‘s “Chinese Democracy” because of your recommendation!

  4. That’s cool, tokyo! Yeah, definitely give the new GNR a shot if you were a fan of the indulgent UYI albums and don’t mind a little technology sprucing up your rock.

Me though? Eh, I’m just a guy babblin’ on. I really have no clue. ;)

  5. I love your review too, I am a 80s Hair MEtal fan and I was born in the mid-1990s, so it is surprising I like this stuff compared to other people my age, I really hate most music now, you need to review Slide It In and Whitesnake by Whitesnake, also Women and Children First, Diver Down, Balance, Live: Right Here, Right Now, and Van Halen 3 all by Van Halen

  6. Hey man,

I’m working for a label and would like to add your blog to my database, so we can try to send music or whatever to you. I see your email but would like to have a Contact Name.

    Thanks,
    Bret

  7. Your site is awesome! keep it up! :D

  8. Dude, your site is so metal.

It’s ironic that you came up on the “Possibly Related Posts” for my list of favourite bands, most of which are “emo” two of which are more melodic/pop-rock type stuff.
