Band:
Criss Sexx – Vocals
Dick – Guitars
Olavo Barroka – Bass
Pablo Pinheiro – Drums

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this album given this Brazilian band’s name, it just seems too amateurish and attention-whorish (so do a few of the band members’ names). The cover doesn’t do the band any favors either, but behind that cover is a pretty rockin’ album. Perris Records has released a number of slick AOR albums lately, and Nympho definitely has an AOR quality to them (“You Gotta Love”, “I Ain’t Over You”), but they also have a lot in common with ’80s glam and sleaze (“Get Down (Nymphomaniac)”, “Reason To Rock” and “Green Lights Go”). Surprisingly, though I am in love with the subjects, I do not care for “Tits & Ass”.

The band lists KISS, Bon Jovi and L.A. Guns as influences. I hear L.A. Guns, but not so much KISS and Bon Jovi. I do hear a bit of Twisted Sister & Poison though and Criss Sexx’s vocals remind me of Jaime St. James (Black ‘N Blue/ex-Warrant) and Donnie Vie (ex-Enuff Z’nuff).

I’m not a fan of any of the ballads here, they’re just too sappy and cheesy, but all of that is standard for melodic rock, so I don’t hold it against them. Nympho has proven this though — when they want to rock, they do a pretty good job of it. Should they stay away from the ballads on the next album and they’ll have a real crowd pleasing release. As for V.I.P. (“very indecent people”), it’s a mild recommendation for a band that has potential to do better next time.

Highlights: “Ignited”, “Green Lights Go”, “Get Down (Nymphomaniac)”, “All Night Long”, “Reason To Rock”

Upcoming Reviews

Okay, let’s try this again. I didn’t get a chance to review two of the albums I mentioned last. I’ve had a lot of new music coming in and I just haven’t had time to listen to all of it. Or, at least not enough to give albums a solid listen. Afterall, the Best Buy version of Dream Theater’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings is THREE DISCS.

So, again, here’s the list of what should be coming up soon:

Dream Theater – Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Nympho – V.I.P.

Whitesnake – Saints & Sinners

Testament – The New Order

Helstar – Nosferatu

Accept – Restless and Wild

Accept – Metal Heart

Overloaded – Hail the Kingdom

Upcoming Reviews

With the live album theme here at METAL EXCESS winding down, it’s time to switch gears and touch upon some new releases and reissues that I’ve had sitting here for some time. If all goes according to plan, here’s what will keep me busy into next week and beyond. Hopefully, I can toss in a few surprises along the way as well…
